In July of 2012 we took a small group of students and an adult chaperone on a trip to the coast. The students that were allowed to go on the trip had the highest attendance in our high school English class. For the first part of the trip we stayed with a family from the area. We spent time harvesting coffee and fruit on an organic farm, and our students helped paint a pre school.
Then we took a tour of a mangrove forest and learned about frigate birds. After that we traveled down the coast to the "Isla de la Plata" where we saw blue footed boobies, sea turtles and went snorkeling. After touring the island the boat headed out to the open ocean to look for whales. We were able to watch the whales leaping and playing for about 20 minutes before we had to head back to land.
This trip was a one of a kind experience for our students where they learned about another part of their country and culture.
